Umm Al Jimal

Umm Al Jimal is an ancient archaeological site located in northern Jordan. It was once a bustling Roman-Bizantine town and later inhabited by various cultures, including the Nabateans and Byzantines. The site features well-preserved ruins of houses, churches, streets, and other structures, providing insights into the daily life of its inhabitants. The buildings most worth visiting include the tall barracks with their chapel, several large churches, numerous open-roofed cisterns, the outline of a Roman fortress, and the remains of several city gates.

Visiting Umm Al Jimal

The eastern most of the major northern cities, Umm al Jimal is located at the edge of the eastern basalt desert plain, along a secondary road that was close to the junction of several ancient trade routes that linked central Jordan with Syria and Iraq.
